Pinot Noir Chardonnay : A Snapshot

With a turbulent past, the term Pinot Noir Chardonnay is now the name used to describe what was once formally known as Champagne. The name Pinot Chardonnay has been derived from the varieties of grapes used in its production, while the old name ‘Champagne’ is now only used by the wines produced from the same name region in France, due to European Union action to protect its name.

Following the change of name, nothing else much has changed with the taste and texture of the wines, keeping them as exciting and alluring as any other Champagne. Most Pinot Chardonnays are produced in the same way as many of the French Champagnes.
Even well known champagne distributors like Moet and Chandon have a few hidden Pinot Chardonnay gems hidden amongst their lists.  Some are produced in a fine estate in the prestigious wine growing area of the Yarra Valley of Australia.

Some seriously good ‘Sparklers’ emanate from New Zealand, particularly the north island.

There has also been some spectacular successes (and failures) over the years during the experimentation with various grape varities.  Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz, in fact, most of the red variety grapes combine well.  You don’t see a Sav Blanc Chardonnay around, do you? there is good reason for that.  However, the combination of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the sparkling fermentation process has resulted in a great success.

The Pinot Chardonnay series has proven to be very popular for social events like picnics, BBQ’s and wine bars, which is why they are commonly distributed in 200ml and 375ml sizes.  Although it is a sparkling variety, modern technology has allowed it to be as versatile as any of the still wines in packaging and delivery.

And as if you weren’t convinced already, Pinot Chardonnays are also much cheaper in price than their champagne brethren, delivering the same quality and enjoyment at a fraction of the price.

Surprise your friends this weekend and set up a blind taste test and see if they can spot the difference!
