If wishes came true we would all be blessed with a heat regulated and air-purified wine cellar. These mean you can put your feet up and not concern yourself with your wines welfare as they will always be in the best environment to age beautifully. Unfortanaly this is very rarely the reality and so we have to make the most of what we have to work with. Here is some top advice for storing your wine collection properly.

Location. Your bottles, both white and red wine also, are best placed in a cool room, away from the light and with moderate humidity levels. The perfect temperature to maintain your wines at is 10° to 16° C (50° to 61° F).Anything higher than this will lead to a decrease in wine quality but anything higher than 25° C will seriously damage the wine’s flavors and body. leaving the bottle in direct sunlight can not only discolor it but also affect the air temperature inside the bottle. The bottle’s cork can expand or shrink depending on the levels of moisture in the room air. This can sometimes have the effect of letting air into the bottle and causing something called oxidation, an annoying situation that happens when the liquid is in contact with oxygen for extensive time.

Positioning. You should position the wines on their side or at a slight angle when storing them. This is due to a real risk of the cork losing its natural moisture and contracting if not in contact with the wine. Oxidation (see previous explanation) can again result from this.

Display. You’re not going to want you wines to stay out of site forever. often you will want them to be on display so you can admire them. A good choice is often a wooden wine cabinet due to the fact these tend to maintain a steady temperature and always go for one that lets you store your wines on their side.Don’t pick any that have a glass cover or doors as they can often trap heat inside when there is light on them.
