With an annual production of seven to eight billion bottles per year, its no wonder France is the most famous and highest wine producing country in the world. You will find wine producing regions in nearly every part of France, each famous for its own style of wine.

The range of wines have undergone some changes resulting in a larger range of cheaper and more expensive wines available. In recent years, France has had to adapt to match the rest of the emerging world in wine production and distribution as the world grows smaller with modern technologies.
In the recent past, the French have been very protective of their origins and wine naming conventions, and with good reason, protecting such famous names as Bordeaux, Champagne and Burgundy.

This is all governed under the Appellation d’Origine Controlee (AOC) system, which was established to preserve the naming rights for the produce from these regions. The body in charge, sets down and enforces the rules in the AOE system which is also used to determine which winemaking practices and grape varieties are allowed to be used in the specific wine producing regions of France.

Another French term that is held close to the heart is “terrior” which is used to indicate the natural growing conditions of the vineyard, such as soil, temperature and slope of the land.

A number of the most famous and prominent grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah all originally came from the vineyards of France. The expansion and colonization of a number of countries over the last few hundred years has seen these grape varieties pop up in many different countries around the world.

Along with the grapes, the colonists brought over the unique French wine making practices in an effort to produce the same style of wines from France.

The long and proud record of French wine has built up a dreamy image in many peoples minds. It has managed to stay at the forefront of wine sales, grape varieties and wine production levels. On top of all of this, it has managed to retain the pole position while still adhering to its age old winemaking traditions.

It is for these reasons that France is still the flagship country leading the world in wine production standards.
