Delivering Your Drop – The Wine Delivery Process
Subscribe To Our FeedMore and more people are ordering their wine over the internet, be it from an auction house or online store. A few weeks later, their wine will roll up on their doorstep, ready to be consumed, but they probably don’t know what it went through to get there.
Everything moves into gear as soon as your order and payment are received by the company.
The first thing that will happen is that your order will be printed out and will be part of a checking process. This is simply some checks to ensure that the company has it in stock and that the wine has been approved for commercial sale.
Once the check is complete, the order will then be given to warehouse staff to find your wines and assemble your order. These are then carefully packed into specially designed delivery packs, minimising movement, allowing for maximum freshness and preventing breakage.
The order is then put into the delivery network, where a number of delivery partners pick up all the packages to be delivered to their designated areas. This usually occurs within hours, but can be longer depending of the amount of orders and if there is a backlog or the wine is out of stock.
The first part of transportation is always done by road, and if in the same country, will mostly be done by road. If its leaving the country, your order will be going to a seaport or airport. A lot of the time which one it goes to will be determined by the amount of shipping paid on the order.
Once it has arrived, this can be the longest part of the transportation process. Packages going through the airport can take a while for processing. As air transportation is the fastest option, most people send deliveries via airplane. Being a popular choice, this has resulted in a backlog of cargo at the airport which will usually add a few days to transportation.
If it goes via seaport, it will make it onto the boat in good time as boats have a large cargo capacity, however the trip itself takes a couple of weeks to complete.
Once in your country, it will then head to a warehouse for processing. Sorting takes typically one to two days and is then loaded into trucks and vans for delivery.
